Small Rewards Can Help You Eat Less

lifestyle

Is it possible to eat less and be happy? Yes, it is. The key is to reward yourself with something other than food. According to a recent study, non-food rewards make eating less more palatable. Smaller portions paired with prizes can you make you happier and slimmer. Let’s see how it works!

Trick Your Brain into Eating Less Food
A study conducted by the University of Arizona has found that people who are rewarded with a non-edible bonus will eat less than those receiving a nonfood toy in a Happy Meal. About 78 percent of six-graders have chosen a half sandwich plus a set of cheap ear buds over a full sandwich. In another study, researchers have discovered that students were more likely to eat less for lunch when they were promised non-edible rewards, such as frequent-flier miles or gift cards.

What’s interesting is that the same reward can be used several times, and still works. The study participants were motivated every time, despite receiving the same prizes. Additionally, they did not eat more the next day to compensate for missed calories. Another interesting finding is that smaller food portions paired with potential rewards activate the same brain areas that usually “light up” for full portions.

How to Reward Yourself without Food
Now that you know these things, apply them in your daily life to shed pounds and eat less without feeling deprived. Reward yourself for sticking to your diet by planning a night out, a weekend getaway, or a shopping session. Depending on your budget, buy a new pair of shoes, go to the hairdresser, or book a day at the spa.

Don’t use expensive items as a reward because it will make it harder to stick to your plan. Choose everyday products, last minute holidays, and fun gadgets that you can actually use. Go to a museum, explore a new park, and do something that brings you joy. This way, you’ll be happier, lose weight, and learn new things.
