Sorry, millennial pink; your reign is officially over. It’s time to start decking your wardrobe, home and accessories out in the latest It-color: Gen Z Yellow. Millennial pink had a good run – we saw it everywhere, from hair color, to home decor, to rose gold accessories for our phones and even restaurant decor. Eventually all good trends must come to an end, and now, the bubbly, energetic, playfully optimistic, Gen Z yellow is making waves on social media as the new color we’re all going to fall for.

Believe it or not, these color trends have a purpose and solid reasonings behind their emergence. Experts at Pantone and Behr make a living out of studying social behavior to determine the role that color plays in our lives. According to these experts, it’s clear that we’re ready to move on from the nostalgic, childhood wonder of pink, and we’re moving toward the flirty, bright, buttercup, sunshine hue.

The carnation, marigold yellow is a welcome departure from the bubblegum millennial pink that we’ve come to love and hate. Gen Z yellow represents the maturity, enthusiasm, and energy that Gen Z embodies. Erika Woelfel, color marketing expert at Behr Paint, notes that, “…yellow represents vitality and ambition, traits we’re seeing in this upcoming generation of tastemakers”.

Have you noticed the emergence of yellow among influencers, fashion brands and social media? After taking a glance at a few of our favorite Instagram feeds, we can’t help but notice that this shade has been subtly creeping up on us since the summer. Then of course there was Beyonce’s Lemonade which we’d like to think may have been the catalyst for an entire shift of a color trend.
