Don’t Try These DIY Sunscreens at Home

Make no mistake: sun protection is a must if you’re planning on spending a significant amount of time outdoors. It’s always a good idea to protect yourself with SPF before heading out the door. Lately there has been a rise in DIY sunscreens making the rounds on blogs and Pinterest, with promises of holistic, natural ingredients that encourage you to save money and gain peace of mind with sunscreens you can whip up in your kitchen.

There is significant evidence that sunscreens are negatively impacting the environment. Chemicals in store bought sunscreens are destroying coral reef systems and harming maritime life. On the other hand there are studies that show that too much sunscreen can prevent an individual from getting enough vitamin D which may assist in preventing breast and prostate cancer. We’re well aware of the serious dangers of melanoma and how vital sunscreen is in protecting yourself.

As much as you’re committed to your health and preserving the environment, don’t be lured into the latest fad of SPF DIY’s making their rounds on the internet. The bloggers and wellness buffs promoting these blends haven’t thoroughly researched the efficacy of these ingredients, nor can they guarantee their claims. These DIY recipes are typically nothing more than sun shielding zinc oxide, coconut oil, almond oil, shea butter, and a few essential oils, which aren’t enough to offer realistic protection from harmful UV rays. Director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology, Joshua Zeichner, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, cautions anyone considering using a DIY sunscreen, stating, “I never recommend opting for a DIY option…Attempting to make your own sunscreen can potentially lead to disastrous results, including severe burns and skin cancer later in life. While certain natural ingredients may offer protection from the sun, there is no way to ensure the quality of protection, the stability of the ingredients, or a lasting effect on the skin.”

The bottom line: Pass on this DIY. As fun as it might be to create your own sunscreen blend, it isn’t worth risking your health. Instead, check out these safe and affordable sunscreens and have fun in the sun!
