Hitting the gym after work can be a great way to end a stressful, busy day — but we know how hard it is to find the motivation (and energy) to get there. Check out these 5 encouraging tips from fitness pros and experts to help you head to the gym after work!

Turn Gym Night Into Date Night

Trainer Tatiana Lampa recommends making a date with yourself for a sweaty gym session! At the beginning of the week, schedule in specific days and times that you’ll exercise. Plan a different workout or routine for each day. By planning out your workouts you’ll be committed to hitting the gym – and you can look forward to crossing the workouts off of your calendar!

After an exhausting, stressful day at work, we know how hard it is to motivate yourself to get to the gym. When you can’t imagine picking yourself up to workout, remember this: exercise is good for your mind! Certified personal trainer and pro golfer Andia Winslow  explains, “Exercise not only calms the mind, but it enhances brain function and encourages innovation.” If you’re feeling overwhelmed, lacking focus, or you need a creative breakthrough at work – a good sweat session can help you leap over that mental hurdle!

Eat Breakfast

Wendy Bazilian, R.D., co-author of The Super Foods Rx Diet: Lose Weight with the Power of SuperNutrients and an American College of Sports Medicine-certified health and fitness specialist believes that the first hour after waking is crucial when it comes to working out. Bazilian recommends eating a healthy meal in the morning to fuel your body throughout the day. Start the day with a breakfast made up of protein, a complex carbohydrate (like whole grain toast) and a fruit or a veggie.

Put Your Goals in Writing

Writing down your goals – especially in a place that you’re likely to look or check often – can help to motivate you to exercise after work. When you regularly look at your diet and fitness goals, you’ll be more likely to stick with them. Write down your goals in a journal (a good option if you have shared office space) or on a piece of  paper that you can stick on a bulletin board at work, and you’ll always have your goals in clear sight.

Change Into Your Workout Clothes Before You Leave Work

Hold yourself accountable, give yourself a visual cue and keep yourself committed to your goals by changing in to your workout clothes before you leave for the day! When you hop into your workout clothes at work (rather than waiting to do it at the gym) you’ll be much more motivated to knock out that sweat session!
