It’s no secret that a quick trip to the grocery store for a few items can rack up a pretty huge bill. If you’re someone who prefers to shop organic, or frequently purchases prepared, precut or unique health food items, you know how quickly those items add up. The good news is that you can still eat healthy while saving money at the supermarket! You don’t have to sacrifice your wallet in order to keep nutritious items in your home. Here are 5 of the top tips on how to make better, budget-friendly decisions when you’re shopping at the grocery store.
Avoid Certain Name Brands
Many brands will typically overprice their items. Luckily there are items at stores like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods’ own brand, 365, that have quality items at affordable prices. Maggie Moon, MS, RD, author of The Mind Diet explains, “There are retailers that are known for carrying lower-cost produce that is still great quality. My favorites are Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods 365. It makes bargain shopping easier.”
Eat Seasonally
Eating seasonally isn’t only convenient, it’s also budget friendly! Moon says, “Pick your produce in season for your region. Local produce at peak season costs less because there is ample supply without the cost and damage caused by traveling long distances.”
Shop On Wednesdays
It may be convenient to shop on a Sunday or a Friday, but consider scheduling your grocery shopping around the middle of the week. Elizabeth Ann Shaw, MS, RDN, CLT, CPT, recommends, “…shop on Wednesday! Not only is this the day of the week that most stores begin their new weekly ad, but many also actually still honor the week priors sales too,”
Start Meal Planning
When you’re planning your meals for the week, think about ingredients that you can stretch to make a number of different meals. Shaw says, “Can that quinoa be served for breakfast and a lunch or dinner meal? Yes, yes it can! Using different spices and cooking techniques can help vary the flavor profile so you get an exciting and delicious meal every time” If you love vegetables like potatoes, you’re in luck! Shaw says, “These take less than five minutes to make in the microwave, contain important nutrients like potassium and vitamin A if you go for the sweet potato variety, and most importantly, are budget-friendly.”
Don’t Waste Money On Herbs
Julie R. Thompson, Senior Taste Editor of The Huffington Post recommends growing your own herb garden instead of spending precious dollars at the grocery store on a few sprigs. If you’re pressed for space, you can still grow a bountiful herb garden on a window sill, on a wall, or on a kitchen counter. You can also look into community gardens in your area. One full herb plant is typically less expensive than a full package of herbs!
