If you’re a dog lover, a dog owner, or you’ve recently been mulling over whether or not it’s time to get a dog, you might want to look into the incredible health benefits of owning a dog. Dogs encourage us to get out and get active, they offer unconditional love, and there’s no doubt that cuddling up with a pup on a chilly night can offer comfort and warmth at the end of a long day.
While dogs certainly rate high on the cute and cuddly scale, did you know that there are many health benefits to owning a dog? Science has found that not only are dog owners more content and generally satisfied with their lives, but dog owners may also be benefitting from some surprising advantages to having a pooch.
Dog Owners Sleep Better
According to a study by the Mayo Clinic, having a dog in your bedroom – not in your bed – may contribute to better quality sleep. The study took place over a six month period in which 40 dog owners reported that they had very few sleep issues, however with a dog in the room they experienced better quality of sleep. The study also found that when the dogs were on the bed, the participants had a lesser quality of sleep. The bottomline: simply knowing a dog is in the room can create comfort, companionship, and increased relaxation.
Dogs Decrease Depression
A 2006 study showed that caring for a dog significantly reduces the effects of a depressive episode. Taking a dog for a walk, getting out and being active, and meeting other dog owners can ease feelings of loneliness and depression. While simply owning a dog cannot completely reduce the symptoms of serious depression, it has been shown to be very effective for some individuals struggling with anxiety and depression.
Dogs Help Young People Develop Immunities to Allergens
A new study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found that up until the age of 10, exposure to animals such as dogs can aid in preventing children from developing asthma, allergies and eczema. When children are introduced to animals at a young age, they may be shielded from developing allergies to these animals.
