How to Prepare Your Home for the Cold Season

People from all over the world clean their homes in the months running up to Christmas. Your kitchen and bathroom are packed with germs that can increase your risk of illness in the winter. Thus, it’s recommended to clean these spots thoroughly. This way, you’ll kill germs and bacteria, remove mold, and prevent the build-up of grime.

So, are you ready for a “healthover?” Prepare your home in four easy steps:

Clean Germy Hotspots
Bacteria and fungi grow in warm, moist places, such as the sink, shower, and hobs. There are 100,000 times more bacteria in the average kitchen sink than the bathroom. Kitchen surfaces are contaminated with bacteria too, so they require proper cleaning. Don’t forget about the bathroom sink, which boasts over 2,733 bacteria per square inch. Wash interior windows, vacuum baseboards and drapes, and clean humidifier elements. Pull the fridge away from the wall to vacuum coils of debris and dust.

Check the Heating System
Clean the heating system filters and make sure the heating vents are not covered by furniture. Hire an expert to check the HVAC system for leaks and other glitches.

Inspect the Chimney
Most homeowners have no idea what can build up in the chimney. This place attracts dust, carbon material, bugs, and even small animals. For this reason, it’s important to clean the fireplace and chimney at least once a year. Call a professional to handle chimney cleaning, and clear out ash from the fireplace yourself.

Clean the Gutters
Remove debris and leaves from the gutters to prevent clogging and ice dams. This can lead to water damage and leaks. Look for damaged gutters and replace them. Run water through the gutters to make sure there is no leakage.
