According to the latest report from the World Health Organization, red meat may cause cancer. WHO also claims that cured and processed meats are definitely carcinogenic. Other studies indicate that people who eat three ounces of red meat daily are 13 percent more likely to die from cancer or heart disease compared to those who don’t have this habit. At the same time, bacon and deli meats may increase the risk of premature death by 20 percent. Yet, scientists cannot explain why these foods are considered dangerous.

How Red Meat Affects Your Health
Numerous studies conducted over the years have shown that red meat has a negative impact on health. Regular consumption may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, type II diabetes, colon cancer, and atherosclerosis. Salami, bacon, sausages, and hot dogs appear to be the most dangerous types of meat.

Some experts claim that meat isn’t what it used to be. Nowadays, most types of meat contain hormones and antibiotics that build up in your body over the years. Others believe that frying, roasting and other cooking methods lead to the formation of chemicals that affect meat quality. However, everyone seems to agree that all processed and cured meat is bad for health. These foods are just as dangerous as arsenic, alcohol, cigarettes, and asbestos.

Should You Give Up Red Meat Forever?
Red meat has long been considered one of the best protein sources available. It’s also rich in zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B12. The WHO doesn’t necessarily recommend a vegetarian diet, but one based mostly on white meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables. Their advice is to limit processed meat to 70 grams a day and red meat to 90 grams a day.

If you’re concerned about your health, choose organic and grass-fed meat. Avoid bacon, ham, corned beef, and smoked meat. Keep in mind that frozen meat is considered unprocessed, so there’s nothing to worry about. Cutting back on processed meats could add years to your life and prevent most diseases.
