Americans Consuming Less Soda

While diabetes and obesity still seem to be at an all time high in the U.S., a new Gallup poll has revealed that many Americans are now avoiding soda, as well as fat and sodium. More than half of the people surveyed claim to be avoiding soda and 50% are trying to cut down on sugar in their diets. Fruits, vegetables, and poultry were the foods least likely to be avoided, which shows an increased awareness of healthy eating among the population.

There is more information than ever available at our fingertips, which can at least partially explain these results. Between the latest articles about health and fitness and T.V. programs that highlight healthy living, Americans are becoming more attuned to healthy lifestyle choices. It’s now common knowledge that foods that are high in sugar, fat, and sodium increase the risk of heart disease, obesity, and other health related illnesses.

The lower the demand for unhealthy food, the less likely it is that it will be produced, and more likely that nutritious foods will go down in price and become more of a staple in the American diet. This is great news for our overall wellbeing!
