Spring is a beautiful, bustling time of year when everything seems to come alive! Blossoms are blooming and the grass is bursting with green, luscious color. As gorgeous as spring is, it also comes with the nuisance of allergies. Sinus pressure, itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, sneezing and a sore throat are just a few of the dreadful side effects that allergy sufferers have to endure throughout allergy season.
To make allergy season a bit more bearable, allergist Neeta Ogden, MD recommends three must-haves that you should always keep on hand to help you feel your best! She suggests, “The cornerstones of treating allergies is usually a mix of a 24-hour oral antihistamine, an intranasal steroid, and some sort of allergy eye drop.”
If you’d rather skip an expensive trip to the pharmacy there are natural ways to alleviate your symptoms! Pay attention to managing your stress levels, avoiding certain foods like celery and spicy foods, and watching your alcohol intake. And, of course, avoid pollen as much as possible.
It’s hard to confine yourself to staying indoors during this beautiful season, so if you enjoy gardening, exercising or eating outside, be cautious! Dr. Ogden recommends wearing barriers (sunglasses, gloves, and hats) to decrease direct contact with pollen. It’s also important to rinse off after you’ve spent time outside. “Always wash your hands after exposure, and if possible, take a shower, making sure to wash your hair and rinse and gently wipe eyes and lids,” Ogden says.
