Don’t Drink Sugary Fruit Juices

Michael Mosley, journalist and pioneer of the 5:2 diet states, “Juices and smoothies are liquid, so you don’t really notice the calories, but they are not healthy.” Swap sugary juices and smoothies with healthy green smoothies and calorie free teas!

Cut Down On Alcohol

You may be less likely to make good food choices if you’re regularly drinking. Mosley warns, “There are a lot of calories in drinks but also if you’re drinking alcohol you’re more likely to reach for the crisps because your inhibitions go.” Alcohol also stalls your weight loss efforts because the body will use alcohol as a primary source of fuel rather than your own body fat! Instead of drinking alcohol, drink mocktails like a cucumber-mint limeade or a grape-pineapple-mint fizz!

Cut Out Sugary Carbs

“I would recommend cutting out sugary carbs like chocolate, cake and bread…Bread is very sugary unless you make it yourself,” says Mosley. Avoiding sugary carbs during the holiday season is tough, but it can be done! Pad your diet with lots of healthy fats, non-starchy veggies, and fiber-filled foods to help you curb sugar cravings!

Don’t Snack Between Meals

The holidays are a prime time for snacking, but don’t fall into the habit of mindlessly snacking on holiday baked goods and leftovers. Mosley explains, “I wouldn’t recommend eating lots of small meals, that’s a popular diet myth.I often skip lunch because it’s good to go for longer periods between eating.” Distract yourself from reaching for a snack by brushing your teeth, going for a walk, drinking a glass of water, or playing a game on your phone. After 20 minutes you won’t ever remember you wanted a snack.
