5 Effective Workouts to Help You Lose Weight

Looking for a workout that will melt fat and help you lose weight? Check out these 5 incredible workouts that experts swear by to torch calories and drop those unwanted pounds!

Interval Training

Holly Rilinger, a Nike master trainer, master Flywheel instructor, and star of Bravo’s Work Out New York says that interval training is “Any form of exercise where your heart rate spikes and then comes down repeatedly. What this means is that you’ll work out hard for a set amount of time and then have a set period of active rest or recovery. HIIT and cycling are two awesome ways to incorporate interval training into your workout routine to lose weight. While cycling focuses more on cardio than resistance training, you’ll be working large muscle groups which is a key component to weight loss. Rilinger explains, “The more muscles you have to incorporate, the more calories you’re going to burn because those muscles all require energy in order to work.”

Boxing

Adam Rosante, certified personal trainer and author of The 30-Second Body says, “At its essence, boxing is really another form of interval training.” The trick to getting the most out of your workouts is to not just punch with your arms- punch with your core! If you’re new to boxing, you’ll want to start out in a class where you can learn the proper techniques and form. Boxing in a class also helps to keep you working at an intensity level that will keep you seeing major results in a short amount of time.

Bootcamp

“You’ll perform exercises, some more cardio-focused and others strength-focused, full-out for short bursts of time, coupled with short periods of rest,” says Rosante. If you’ve never taken a bootcamp class before, let your instructor know! They’ll keep an eye on you and help you modify challenging poses, adjust you, help you with your form or add weights to up the intensity if you’re at a more advanced level!

Running

Running is an easy and inexpensive way to lose weight! For weight loss, you’ll want to do more than a light jog. Try to run hills, sprint, or turn up the incline on the treadmill. Rosante explains, “Running up hills forces you to work your glutes and legs—two of your body’s biggest muscle groups—even more, which requires smaller muscle recruitment and more energy expenditure”. Sprinting and making the most of inclines will also help you burn more calories! Rosante also stresses the importance of proper form. He explains, “Lean into the hill, and drive your knees as high as you can, striking the ball of each foot down directly under your body,” he says. “Keep your hands open and arms bent at 90 degrees, and drive your arms straight forward up to face level, then backward to the top of your back pocket.”
